Answer on an answer

That "example image" option is what you are needed for uploading a photo.
Also you can mention that in "Appended Description" option. But I think that everyone who want to draw something for a contest will read description and answers of a contest holder in the comments. This is the only information we have about what you are needed... So other artist will understand that this will be just a photo of your current tattoo.
Or you can post a Dropbox link here in the comments! Artist will check all available information, for sure.
Respectfully,
Tony.

Answer

Thank you, Tony...Much appreciated...I defer to you...I'm creatively challenged. The one place I see to upload is for an example image for this contest...I worry that any other artists checking in to enter a design might think that's an example of what I'm looking for rather than a reference.point to help understand what I already have...I could maybe post a Dropbox link in one of these messages....I wonder if that will work?

Answer

I don't think there is existing some symbols like those you are mentioned, but there is a lot ways to hide letters or a word into design, for sure.
And yeas, the whole design can be explained to represent a journey of overcoming an serious illness. But probably not with symbols, at least in my head...

Thank you for a quick response

Well, I know exactly that somewhere there is an option for you to upload images.
But a photo of your current tattoo is not a necessary thing, this can help us just to know what kind of style do you like.
I think that your complex idea is possibly to show with some combination of allegories... and this idea is more complex that it can be showing by a "language of symbols".
I am working now on this allegories.
Respectfully,
Tony.

Allegory

Tony, thank you. Unfortunately I don't have any illustrative examples, I was hoping you all would be able to select symbols or elements and come up with something that hits those points for me....In continuing to think about this, I'm thinking maybe something roughly circular...3-5 inches on my left shoulder... Is there a tribal symbol that might be worked into a geometric image or a mandala? Is there a symbol or an image that would represent a live altering love? Can those letters be worked into a design in a manner that they're only really apparent to the designer and me? Can the whole thing be explained to represent a journey through/overcoming an significant illness? (Thinking themes like perseverence, etc.)

I'd be happy to upload my current tattoo image...I just don't know where/how. It's a b/w phoenix with fouled anchors in its claws and the african symbol for change/transformation over its head...

Allegory

Hello. Thank you for an answer and I think you are right about concepts and examples. Do you have some example of a tattoo or other visual art with that kind of ideas?
I will upload some "concept-question" soon so we can talk about my ideas clearer.
I find your contest very intriguing and challenging.
P.S. Can you show as your current tattoo? It might be helpful.
Best Regards,
Tony.

Would be happy to talk through concepts/examples before you put pen to paper if it would help...

Clarification

Tony,

Totally understand the confusion, and sorry I'm having a hard time articulating it.

My first thought here was to use symbols or a combination of symbols, that could be interpreted two ways. Unfortunately, I'm not creative enough to take too many more steps down that path....I want to be able to explain the tattoo as having a meaning related to persevering through an illness...but I want it to also reflect the lasting imprint that a relationship has had on my life. This is where I struggle with your question a bit...is this simply a matter of symbols with dual meanings or is an allegory reflecting a journey a better way to go...This is where I really need the creative help...

Clarify

Hello. So you want some kind of an allegory for your tattoo? Or an allegory in a "symbol language"?
I need some clearer description, because now this is too foggy to know what to draw. A shoot in the dark is a bad way to making design.
Hope you understand me,
Tony.

Additional design thought

Perhaps a mandala? symbolizing a journey...with some symbolism related to the other design elements I mentioned....
