I combined the two designs.
Added lines and highlights to the middle to give it a 3d shield look.. Battle worn and old.
Design with a mock up of what it would look like approximatly..
The ink is faded bad so white should cover no problem to make the highlights.
Honor could be removed or changed to a different word.
Inks, markers, and colored pencil on paper.
Would be happy to make changes.
The stone idea sounds interesting :)
My other idea was the skin around it to look like broken stone with some cracks.. Like the stone was chiseled away and the shield was left. The broken stone fading into the skin would look 3d.
Think I'll do it anyways for a folio piece.
Will do a design with just the shield looking old and cracked as well.

But I dont like the flames (I dont think I want to add any more elements). Also I would love to see the line around the shield with more cracked shading effect.
Regarding the dimension, your design is very streched out. But that is MY fault, and I do appoligise for that. SORRY :(
I updated the contest MAIN discussion to include more info about the form factor. You where right when you told me before that there was something wrong with the dimensions. So I took my ipad to the mirror and fount out why. Please read the main contest comment area.

sheild is drawn to the dimensions specified.
You'll need all the color reworked on your tat, and white added to it for highlighting. Its faded pretty bad so the white should show up just fine.
Have another Idea I'll do up.
Would be happy to make any changes or additions you want.
