I wanted to see it colored so i finished it out. I like the birds dark like that, it makes for a strong upper edge on the design. Shading the lotus helps to establish the volumes in it. I want to try some color schemes but I know what happens when you give this mouse a cookie so im not even going to touch that until i know which colors you want... or if you like this design at all... lol!
Oooh I should have done the egg speckled... but girl its bedtime. lol
The line work for the tattoo. I would imagine this sitting centered on your hip from a side view. There are lotus blossoms at various forms of blossom from a bud to full bloom.
I did not color it, because I am not sure which color scheme you would want- A line tattoo with varying contours shows well, and looks delicate and lacey. That or a 2-3 tone shading will show nicely on light medium or darker toned skin. Depending on your skin tone, the Lotus can be rendered in blue/gold (Nile Lilly) or pink/green (Indian Lotus) or even pink and white... You can also do them in a black and grey gradient. Ooooor absolutely any color scheme you choose :)
I think the birds would be best in either a light grey or dark shading scheme... ok I am a libra, this is what happens when i am free to choose- there are a billion options I hope that helps explain why i couldnt narrow it down!! lol hope you like it, please let me know if you would like anything changed.

For this attempt, I combined the bird and heart forms of Sankofa by using mirror images of the bird looking backwards to make the heart.
I started with a rough figure sketch on an archetypical(esque) female hip. I used the lotus' as background to make what I like to call the "lace edge" which softens up the edges of feminine tattoos, and then to balance the design. The wheel of karma is right at the hip joint, which centers the composition and allows it to move with your leg- this design should never crease, and should not stretch or deform much over time.
I left the phoenix out, because I did not want the design to get to crowded, and of the elements mentioned, I think that it has the most as a separate/standalone tattoo. You can also use the tree branch in its claws- I have designed very nice phoenix's carryng various symbolic items. I also thought the phoenix could extend upwards up your side if you wanted.
Some of the symbols I used are based off of internet references, so if any of the symbols need to be adjusted, please let me know.
