Summary:
As a multi-instrumentalist, I'd like a tattoo showing my instruments and a waterfall of musical notes.
Description:
As a multi-instrumentalist, I'd like a tattoo showing my instruments and a waterfall of musical notes.
The instruments are: Ukelele, mandolin, mandola, banjo, dobro and guitar.
There's a text (in a banner?):
“3 Chords & the Truth.”
So: Not the word "Maestro".
Style:
I'd like it to be sailorish/graphic, but not cartoony. Simple and if coloured: modest.
I'll place it high on my arm and have the musical notes twirl down from underneath the main tattoo to the backside and onto the inside of my arm. I've tried to illustrate the placement in one of the images (not me) and have drawn the path of the musical notes in a line (broken line for the back/inside of the arm)
Additional Details:
- Gender: Male
- Size: 7.5 x 7.5 centimeters
- Detail: Medium
- Winning artist must provide stencil / line work at completion of contest
Appended Description (August 4 2010 3:21am):
The instruments (my basic drawing), would be approx 3 inches wide. The trail of musical notes will go from the front to the back of my arm and be approx. 9 inches long.
I'll draw and upload an outline/tracing.

thanks for the designs, although surprising and goodlooking, it might be too assymetrical for me. Besides that, I think the nearest text being the last to read is not logical enough.
Art-n-coffee:
glad you made it! The design is clear and but there are two aspects that I'd change. The overall shape doesn't appeal to me, and the integration of the banner and the instrument lacks finesse.
I know my answers are short, but that's due to the deadline and giving room for last alterations.
Sorry about that.

But 13star made me realize the briefing wasn't that bad. This the "sailorish" "traditional" style I'm looking for.
Just a couple of remarks:
The shape of the banners turning inward "closes" the tattoo. I'd rather have it open.
I'm not sure if the typeface and the smallest instruments will do well in this small tattoo.
I like this set of colors.
This design could maybe improve with some colour.
The musical tail looks fine
Because you call it a "rough sketch", I'll comment on it as such.
From the top:
- For placement of the tattoo, I'd think a bowed top profile (higher in the middle) or straight would be more practical.
- The banner & type could be more loose.
- The tail could belly a bit more to make the flow more natural.
- The number of real "notes" should be far more than other signs, to make the tail more musical.
Your version is a very exact interpretation of my rough. Feel free to go wild. My rough is just an intention or visual explanation of the basic elements I'd desire.
I hope this helps.

Nope, don't be restricted by my amaturistic design.
I have searched on flicker and found some examples I like, ranging from simple to more complicated:

I understand it's a wide range, but I guess it all depends on how the font works with the design.
Will this answer do?

I hope this helps. It's not free enough, but might provide an indication.

Wrapping around your arm. With your arm flat at its side what is the with, and with your arm held out alittle what is the circumference. This is so we can get placement right and the wrap around right.
How many times do you want it to wrap around? if you want it to wrap around alot youll need to measure the circumference lower down as well since your arm tapers otherwise itll wrap around to many times possibly with only one measurement.
