Summary:
40's pin up Mermaid with husband and sons names=)
Description:
I have never had a tattoo and that surprises most people who meet me (guess they figure I would have by now). This will be my first and only tattoo. I was scared I wouldnt get exactly what I wanted but I saw this and figured wth! I would like a 40's pin up style mermaid with blonde hair and blue eyes like myself. Incorporated into the tattoo would be three names; Mark (my husband) which I would like to have on her arm (as a tattoo) and my two sons names; Liam and Kevin (possibly holding the names in her palms or something close-I am looking for artists to help me conceptualize this part since im not sure how to do it). I want to place the tattoo on the back of my neck, roughly 4-5 inches in height and 2-3 inches in width. I realize this isnt very large but my biggest concern is that the names be legible. I do want color, detail and realism=)

But we could stand a visit from the feedback fairy!
pretty good info:
# All artwork should be tattoo-friendly:
* Lines in the artwork should not be too “tight”. No black line should have less that 2 mm space between it and any other line. No lightly colored or blank space within a darker colored area should be less than 2 mm in diameter.
* Do not use colors in flash that are not commonly used in tattooing. “White” areas in flash are generally going to be skin tone. White should be used in flash SPARINGLY if at all as some tattooists won’t even use pure white. Fluorescent colors should not be used in flash, nor metallic colors.
* Tattoo flash in general should have clean, clear distinct lines within the design. You can’t “sketch” a tattoo on the skin and tattoo flash is not sketched artwork. The popularity of “lineless” tattoo artwork is growing, but not commonplace at this time.
* Keep the price of creating the actual tattoo (based on time required to tattoo it) in mind when designing the flash. Using 20 different colors in a 2 inch tattoo is going to really piss off any tattooist. In general, the larger the design the more colors and complexity the design can appropriately contain.
* Common Mistakes that Make Flash LESS Tattoo-Friendly: The line work is too tight. Ink spreads on skin over time, and if the design is too detailed for its size, the tattoo will bleed into a messy ink blob.
* Blank areas in designs are not white. Skin comes in all colors, and pure white tends NOT to hold in skin (many tattooists won’t even use pure white). An area in your design that is left blank is not white, it is skin color.
* Tattoo ink only comes in certain colors. Don’t use fluorescents or metalics in your flash.
* Flash artwork in general should have clean, clear, distinct outlines. You can’t use a tattoo machine to “sketch” on someone’s skin. A “sketched look” can be created by an experienced tattoo artist, but this should be an intentional design choice by the tattoo artist, not as a standard for tattoo flash.
...
Talk to local tat artists. some can be asses others are nice and will have no problem talking to you.
read books about tattooing. get some tat magazines.. go to tat conventions. Get some tats yourself to see how its done. Look at before and after photos on the internet.
know anyone in your family that has tats? Look at them. My grandfather was in the navy for a really long time, always in the sun. he never EVER wore short sleeves I found out why when he was on his death bed. his arms were covered in greyscale tats that had spread so bad you couldnt tell what any of them were. Also he was 85 who knows what type of ink he used, or how it was done. but that shows lifestyle is something you should take into consideration. I myself work indoors and dont get much sun but am still starting to see some spread.
This tattoo should be small and also with high amount of details - I`m trying to do something tattooable ... but those scales ...
must change them.
4961 is alittle better with the scales but its still gonna bleed together, and the bottom of the tail is going to really bleed together bad.
4959 the mark is better but things are still gonna bleed together.
Need to think about how tats will look in the furture, not just now. not trying to be mean at all. just trying to help, I think everyone that does these contests should study tattooing to get an idea of how they work and what happens over time and with exposure to sun and what not. Just cuz it looks good on paper doesnt mean itll work on skin.

Alissa, the hair is nice but all those lines will bleed together, try using color to make the lines because if the color bleeds it wont matter so much since its the hair color itself. love how happy she looks.

Shadrane: Very nice! While I want the names legible I would prefer they be incorporated into the drawing. Perhaps in waves, or her tail? I would also like scales on her tail.
I should also mention my favorite colors are blue and green (which luckily are good colors for this tattoo...lol)
Thanks!=)
Here is my style of tat girls, if you like my style at all then Ill give it a go. http://#/contests/c/old_school_vegas_pinup_9650/less_smoke_3510
