Summary:
Do you love Salvadore Dali? Want to help me design a tribute to my chocolate lab in his style?
Description:
Hello,
I am looking to get a tatto that will express the oneness I felt with my recently passed chocolate labradore retreiver as a tribute. I prefer subtlety and the artwork to contain the meaning I am looking for, so no RIP, or dates or anything that would make it obvious to a stranger what it means.
The ideas that I have are to have some sort of double image where a man is reflecting or in the same shape next to a dog in the style of Salvadore Dali's Metamorphasis of Narcissus (http://www.authenticsociety.com/img/Metamorphosis_of_Narcissus.jpg) or Swans Reflecting Elephants (http://www.myfreewallpapers.net/artistic/wallpapers/dali-swans-reflecting-elephants.jpg). I am only looking for something in the vein of the main image in the pictures, I know Dali tended to put a lot of other details littered throughout his paintings.
The size would be at largest about 6" x 6", maybe a little smaller (5 x 5) would be best. This image will be going on my calf .
I will be very responsive with any questions you have.
I have added some pictures of me and my dog as well as the Dali work I mentioned if that helps at all.
I had worked with an artist recently on this but he did not take the job. Please see all the questions and answers between us below which might provide some helpful information.
1. What is the meaning of this piece?
- The meaning is to show how much my dog will always be a part of me. I find the making the same shape to show how she will always be with me even if in spirit
2. Do you want a generalization of a dog and human form?
- A generalization is what I am looking for, I want this to be more metaphoric/symbolic than literal. However though it is not a requirement if it is possible to have at least a part of it be similar to the general Chocolate Labrodor Retriever form.
3. Should this be Dali themed (landscape) or simplistic?
- This should be simplistic, the two forms mirroring each other only, the reason I gave the Dali reference was because he used the mirroring technique using two different forms some how making the same shape. I am not looking for a copy of a Dali piece and not the landscapes or random items that tend to be all over his art.
4. Are there other elements that you would like to see in the artwork (flowers, plants, backgrounds, etc)
- I am looking for the two forms only.
5. You said that you would like the dog to somewhat appear to be a choc. lab, what about the human form? Abstract, representational?
- It doesn't matter as long as it doesn't come into question that it is a man's image. I am happy if I look at it and thing that is an abstract of a man, or a representation of a man... . The dog doesn't necessarily have to be an exact chocolate lab I just thought that if you could work some the characteristic lab outline shape into the position the dog needs to be in to mirror the other image that would be cool.
6. Another question. Is there a nationality that you lean towards? The reason I ask is I was thinking of making it look more like you might find in ancient cultures. Might be a way to make the person less goofy looking.
- I am half Irish and half Norwegian (McViking, Pillaging for Potatoes....) I am not looking for a shield design though as I have my personally updated family crest incompassing my Mother's, Father's sides of the family as well as Baltimore's flag on my arm.

Additional Question and answer from an artist:
how realistic are you looking to make this portrait? Is there any other subtle under tone designs that your specifically looking for?
I don't want it to be super-realistic. I would like for it to be more of an abstract representation, or interpretation of the forms but not so abstract that it can't be determined that the idea is a man mirroring a dog or vise verse. In all aspects of life I prefer subtlety if that helps... . I am really interested in the mirroring technique, especially the Metamorphosis of Narcissus that I posted in the contest photos.

New question:
What I'm unclear on I guess, is that it is my understanding that you want a realistic feel to this dali interpretation correct? So with the images of yourself that you submitted, I'm unclear on why you added those pictures of yourself to the reference pile for the artists??
- I don't really know why I put the pictures of me and the dog up. I guess I just wanted to humanize it a bit. If anything I want it to be more abstract

This contest has been pre-paid. The winning artist will be paid directly by CreateMyTattoo via Paypal.
I swear the star ratings are changing from what I originally set... Anyway I won't give you a rating without an explanation as to what I like and want to be different about the art. Don't pay the star ratings any attention I will continue to use them only because the website requires me to do so for the health of the contest to stay in the green.
Sorry to hear about your dog passing, I know it's like losing one of the family, my Border Collie passed away five months ago and I miss her terribly.
I've submitted a design, not sure if it's what your looking for, too simple or abstract etc, let me know your thoughts and I'll work on it.
Thanks!

This is quite a design! Forgive me if you dont see a preliminary design right away, I feel this one may take a bit of thought to give it the shape you are looking for. Also I am preparing for an art fair this week, so I will see if I can fit this into my schedule.
I am sorry your dog passed, she sounds like a real sweety. I hope we (yes, I am referring to all the artists) can deliver something that speaks for the bond you two shared.

Melissa
She was incredibly clumsy, constantly falling down the stairs or getting excited and wiping out on the hardwood floors.
Her name was Shadow which fit her completely, she was following me everywhere in and out of the house.
Sorry for the string of thoughts without structure.
Thanks again!

Thanks for the invitation, I appreciate that!

I increased the prize money to $250 because I just read the faq's and saw how much the website takes away from your winnings. Technically 230 would have given you a net of 200 but I just increased it to an even 250 so you get a little over 200 (217.50) for winning.
