Summary:
Unlimited creativity on a cover-up design. No restrictions to design genre.
Description:
I am looking for a custom cover-up for a tattoo depicted in the image shown (tribe.jpg).
As I understand that the existing tattoo will have limitations on how to cover-up would be executed, I will be open to any conceptual art that which the artist believes would do a decent job of not making it appear too much like "just another cover up".
I do have another tattoo of a tribal dragon on my upper back which is on the same side of the body (on the right upper arm and right upper back), therefore if this will help in the design an image of the dragon is attached as well (draco.jpg).
The cover-up need not be another tribal design or be limited to any such similar restrictions.
You are free to be creative and intriguing.
Additional Details:
- Gender: Male
- Size: 4.5 x 9.5 inches
- Detail: Medium
- Winning artist must provide stencil / line work at completion of contest
Appended Description (October 28 2009 11:14am):
You have free creative reign on the choices of color for your design. Any single and/or combination of colors are encouraged. However since my original tattoo is in black, I believe this leaves out a lot of options. But go ahead and make use of the rainbow if you think it will look good on me.

OK, here's the deal. I need something that will be able to cover-up my old tattoo properly.
From looking at some designs, I'll not name names here, it is apparent that some will not be able to work as a good cover-up. I am a layman - so I may be wrong. But as an artist, I hope you will understand what I mean.
Secondly, the design I want can be in an genre. But based on some of the designs put forth so far, I would prefer not to have designs in the following areas:
Masks - Noumen, Oni, Kyogen, Netsuke, etc.
Snakes - all types, except dragons
Currently, my latest fancy has been with PHOENIX. Beautiful creatures that may compliment my back piece which is in close distance to the design on my arm.
KOIs are welcome too.
All others are still welcomed.
Without feedbacks, its hard to find out what you like (>,<)/
thank youuuuu

Sure, please send in your submission as early as you can. So that it would ensure sufficient time for us to discuss the design details.
Thanks.
Yes, this is a cover-up and below the black is a color design with colors like green, pink, blue, red and perhaps more if I recall correctly.
You have experience in this? So laser is out of the question? But I also heard that acid peels are likely more so to cause scarring - especially those raised type ones.
The current skin area is already slightly raised due to the 2 tattoos overlapping one another (and maybe the tattooing process was done slightly too deep to cause the raised scarring?).
I believe if more damage is done to it like laser or acid, will it just cause more hinderance to my skin, without really helping much in the cover-up process?
My idea solution is that the new cover-up at the hands of a skilled artist will be sufficient enough to create a great new tattoo without the need for any lightening or other scary stuff.
Can anyone help me out here?
scaring in the laser removal process. scars can be tattooed on but its a touchy process. if you choose to try to lighten it you should probrably try an acid peel.
it costs less and there is less likelyhood of scaring. the koi is a good idea if it is done right. scales help with cover ups. i'll have a design in soon. stay away from wrecking balm the aplication apperatice is FDA aproved but the ointment is not. it's also been banned frome several countries because it's known to cause skin cancer. i'm sure you will end up with a raelly cool design.
good luck
That is exactly my point. I do not have any particular preference. It can be Gothic, Fusion, Japanese, Western, Abstract Art, anything!
Even if its a weird combination of any of these, if it looks cool as a tattoo, I'm all for it.
My only limitation is that it must be able to do a decent job of covering up my existing tattoo.
Yes, an artist skilled in cover-ups is necessary for the application. But the design must also play its part in making it easier for it to be accomplished.
From my observations, I found that most of the "participating artists" are mostly not professional tattoo artists.
They may be creative and "artists" in their own right, but art on skin has its different set of rules and dimension.
Talking about which, I will be quite interested to see the work submission by REDTIDETATTOO. He gives me the impression that he knows his stuff and understands the artistic dimension necessary in a good tattoo.
Give it a try, I believe you can come up with something nice, after looking at your winning "music themed" design. But no music themes for me though, I'm no musician. Quite tone-deaf actually. lol
You can try and submit your design for a try-out.
I'm quite open to any design genre. But it must have the ability to cover-up my original piece.
As REDTIDETATTOO mentioned, it won't be easy. But I'm hoping for the best.
Thanks.
That's what I'm afraid of. But underneath this layer of black, there is also another layer of color (another cover-up). So will the laser treatment do any good? I'm wondering if it would just smear the black and let the other colors resurface. Which essentially defeats the purpose altogether.
Hmm...
Thanks for your submission. A Koi is a nice choice for a tattoo, but the design itself lacks luster.
The color itself doesn't seem realistic nor does it appear to match well with the rest of the design.
The Koi itself also appears too cartoony to my liking. I would prefer something either more realistic (if life-like) or more artistic.
Finally, are you sure that your design will adequately cover the underlying black tattoo that this is going to cover-up? It appears to be quite risky to me. Probably a skilled tattoo-specific artist can assess this better.
Looks weird overall. Thanks.
I have to have a cover up too. But since I sit on it I don't think about it until summer. When my clothes come off Debbie
