Thanks! I think I will put ink into the final product. Hand drawn is the way to go at first, I think. =)

Makes Sense
June 8 2010 10:40am
I see what you are saying about the date. Let's try one with no date. I like your explanation of the phoenix - might make sense if the middle name is included. So, maybe try spelling out Aidan Nichols like this:

Aidan
Nichols

Centered in the middle. Is there any way the thin out the bottom of the phoenix and make the name part more prominent? Kind of how you did with 4078 but with the design of 4076?

Thanks for your explanation, really helped...

I chose the phoenix because you said that your son was named after his grandfather(?). So the phoenix represents not only strength but also the name being past from one generation to another. I will work up something with just initials but I'm afraid the "Memorial feel" is because of the date incorporated into the design. Generally speaking, the use of a date with initials implies a date of death. You might consider leaving off your son's date of birth. Just a suggestion.

Thinking
June 8 2010 7:07am
May need to change the concept. My sister took a peek and she said it reminded her of a memorial tattoo. Especially because the falcon reminded her of a phoenix which I guess symbolizes rebirth? Eek.

Maybe the best thing to do would be work on just the initials. I think something really strong in script or italics. I'm still looking for fonts I can post. Here is a link to something I think he would like:

Hi again. Is there any way you can thin out the bird an make the initals part more pronounced? I would like that to be the focus and I think it is getting swallowed up by the design. Also, the font could be much stronger. I will add some font ideas to the description section. Thanks again!

I really like your bird-like design, It is actually very fitting as my husband loves peregrin falcons. I like the black one better. Could you posssibly rework with initials ANG instead of name spelled out and DOB in 1.3.08 format? Also maybe make the name/date park more pronounced. And maybe make the feathers look a bit more natural while keeping the flame feel..I really like where this is going...

Melissa and Lightening Child
June 5 2010 9:08pm
Melissa, I agree with black only for sure.

LightningChild, it is really hard to say band vs. free-form...honestly he seems open to both, Again, this is the first part of an entire arm he wishes to do. He has recently said wrist to shoulder on left arm where he presently has nothing....yikes! So, the sky's limit I guess! He did mention he has other people's initals he wants to incorporate eventually....if that helps at all.

Also, he said he likes solid script better than Old English....
Questions

Are you looking for color? When I think classic I'm inclined to think black only.
June 5 2010 1:08pm
so are you thinking an armband with the name and fire elements around it or something a bit more free?

Thanks for your interest!

Definitely not cartoony. I think he would like something classic, like Old English lettering or something Americana-like...maybe a scroll or banner could tie it together? He is kind of a serious guy, I think something with a timeless or historic feel would be good versus something too modern. Also, this is his first-born son and the middle name is after his grandfather. The fire part is tricky - I want it to come off looking like strength, not evil or devilish (my son is only two). Does that help?
What's your husband's style?

Just looking for a little more info before starting to sketch: are you thinking a graphic, something figurative, cartoony, tribal?

Thanks,

-j
